These guys did a great job. This was the first time I've been to a "Dickey's BBQ" and I'll be looking forward to going back again. It's a welcome change from the same old boring burgers and overpriced, often times mediocre, BBQ I've gotten from some road side stands. My son, who had been there before, got the 1-meat platter with the brisket and I got the 2-meat with the brisket and kielbasa. We both got the macaroni and cheese. It all rocked and I can see why my son raved about the macaroni. On the meat side, both the brisket and the kielbasa were good, but the kielbasa was EXCEPTIONAL, both spicy as I ordered it, and with cheese. Can't wait to go back.
The bigger issue was that, when I went to get my BBQ sauces, the 3-ft counter was filthy! It had not only fresh BBQ sauce all over the counter, but it also had BBQ sauce stains that were completely dried out as if they'd been sitting there for a few hours. And, two of the three lids for the BBQ sauce containers had fallen inside the containers, with one, based on the dried-out sauce on the cover, apparently had been sitting inside the container for quite a while.
Apparently, no one in the store seems to understand the concept of clean hygiene. I left the $20 of food I bought on the counter and walked out.
As typical with new places, I waited a few weeks before trying it out, expecting them to have all the new employee/store/service bugs worked out by then. From what I saw and what co-workers told me about what it was like when they first opened, things have gone straight downhill!
Issues I had/have: there is one tiny little 3-ft counter, shoved between the soda machine and the ice-cream machine, to get soda, get ice-cream, get condiments/napkins/silverware/etc., get your BBQ sauces, put lids on your drinks, etc. And this being Delaware, nobody's going to wait for you to get/do everything you need - they'll just try and shove you out of the way.
P.S. you can have all the soft serve vanilla ice cream your heart desires while you are there. Completely free of charge.
Very good quality and the food is already just awaiting your selection. Their rolls are particularly good, not too airy and not to doughy, just right. Green beans have a slight peppery kick to them, creamed spinach is extraordinary, and mac and cheese is definitely good. We ordered the Beef Brisket which was good except we got a lot of fat in ours which was disappointing, we also ordered barbecue chicken which was just right. I sampled the Kielbasa while I was there and thought it was phenomenal. You have to try it for yourself. Oh, and in case you're wondering they have plenty of parking spaces because it does get busy.
Tried the turkey BBQ sandwich with creamy spinach, coleslaw, mashed potato, mac n cheese as sides. Sides are good. Turkey sandwich is also good. Meat was tender and smoked flavored. There are 3 BBQ sauces are okay; sweet, spicy, regular. Sweet is just more brown sugar to regular and spicy is chilli flakes to regular. They all taste the same.
The worst part was that, although they had sauce cups to get BBQ sauce to go, they had no lids for them. When I mentioned it to one of the employees, instead of handing me the package of lids to put on the counter, she asked me how many lids I needed then reached into a package of lids using the greasy gloves she uses to cut the meat, pulled out the three I asked for, and handed the three grease covered lids to me, expecting me to use them. When I refused the dirty lids, none of the employees seemed to understand why I didn't want to use dirty greasy lids.
Dickey's famous BBQ! I had two meat plate, brisket and pulled pork. Portion sizes were perfect, not too full and no need to drag a doggie bag home, forget about and throw away a week later. Meats were cooked perfectly - tender and juicy. Brisket was excellent. My wife had a brisket sandwich and loved it. For folks who have not been to a roadside BBQ like there are scattered across the South, Dickey's has the same set up but in a clean and well lit atmosphere. A big plus on the clean. You come in, get in line and when it' s time to order they cut the meat in front of you, put it on a tray with paper (no plate) and the tray moves along as you choose your sides and drink to the cashier. Once you pay you find a seat and eat great food. We visited about 3 weeks after they had opened and they were still working the bugs out and it took a little longer to place our order so I dinged them a star. Overall good quality food at a reasonable price in a convenient location.
What a joke this place is!
